The chinensis species, with lavender- pink blooms, is more sun and drought tolerant than other Astilbes. This is a late to bloom variety. 'Pumila' is a naturally occurring dwarf form of chinensis. This has a creeping habit and is very floriferous.

Requires constant moisture to perform at best.
Makes an excellent groundcover, as it spreads faster than other chinensis and can tolerate drier soils, but not dry.
