Bergenia gives a wonderful textural difference to the lightly shaded garden.
The big glossy, rounded, heart-shaped leaves contrast nicely with other shade loving perennials. Rose-pink flowers bloom early. Fall foliage color is an added bonus!

Acquired the common name, 'Pigsqeak' for the unusual sound made when a leaf is rubbed briskly between thumb and forefinger.
Can be used as a ground cover, edging along borders and pathways, in rock gardens or in a mass under trees and shrubs. Bergenias are happiest in moist, humus-rich soil.
