Spearmint

Mentha

This common, hardy, garden mint has sharply pointed, toothed, stalkless, hairy, spear-shaped, bright green foliage that emits an intense spearmint flavor and scent when crushed. Dainty, lilac flowers appear in midsummer. Nice groundcover for beds and borders. Plant near paths, decks or porches where fragrance can be appreciated.
Spearmint can be harvested often. The dry leaves can be used for tea. Popular for sachets and potpourri. Simply snip and enjoy.

The genus, mentha, is derived from the name of a nymph, Minthe, who was seduced by Pluto and whom the jealous Perephone turned into a seedling (mint).
